Researchers with the Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences Department at MIT contacted OMX in hopes of moving a very large and valuable piece of equipment from Carnegie Mellon Institute to their office in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The piece, a Trion Laser Module, will be used by MIT scholars to measure isotopic compositions of meteorites to study solar system formation. We told them to worry about their planetary work while we handled moving this piece valued at almost $1,000,000.

The Challenge

The Trion module was made up of four components, whose total weight came in right under one ton. The excessive weight meant we weren’t able to move the module using our regular equipment and needed to build a reinforced base to relocate the piece. Additionally, the high value of the pieces added an extra element of risk. Furthermore, we learned in advance of the move that their would be no loading dock to load the items at Carnegie Mellon and several areas had uneven pavement, making safe transport of the fragile items even more precarious.

The Solution

OMX worked with the team at Precision Crating to build custom pallet bases for each of the four components. The crates were specifically constructed to fit each piece securely and safely and then were shrink and foam wrapped and transported within an enclosed wooden crate for added protection. To protect the crated pieces moving over uneven pavement, our team built small ramps that were strategically placed on pavement slopes as to avoid tilting the crate at extreme angles. Loading the pieces without a loading dock was managed by using safe jacks to move the piece inside the truck and then secured safely before heading up to Cambridge.

Outcome

All items were securely transported, with no issue or damage, to researchers at MIT. The piece is now being used by students and faculty to further their understanding of our earth and solar system.
