What is the most challenging aspect of managing office relocations?
“Sometimes you have to get a little creative and think outside of the box when planning the most effective way to do a move. Especially when dealing with a lot of stairs, no loading docks, very long pushes, etc. I recall one move where we were bringing approximately 4,000 boxes down 4 flights of stairs. We flattened out some commercial bins and placed them over the stairs, with a mover on every landing we slid the boxes down the 4 flights like an assembly line. A lot faster and easier on the back!”
What is the most rewarding aspect?
“When I work with a client from the initial site visit, to proposal, to acceptance, to pre-move planning and moving day, and when it’s all said and done and the client tells you how appreciative they are for the work we did and how happy they are with results. That’s why we do what we do!”
How did you get started in this industry?
“Many years ago I was a single parent raising my son and daughter. I was working full-time but decided to look for another part-time job that I could work on Saturdays to make some extra money. I came across an opportunity to work as a mover for an office moving company and signed up to work Saturdays. After the second Saturday I signed up for Friday nights as well and did that for 2 years. At that point I realized there was something about the office moving business that I thoroughly enjoyed. I resigned from my job and went to work for the moving company full-time in a sales rep capacity. That was 31 years ago. “
What is the most interesting thing you’ve been asked to move over the years?
“I once moved a rather large simulator that a company used to train ship captains how to dock very large ships. It actually has a sort of ship’s bridge where the captain would stand, and a very large screen on the wall that made it seem very realistic, looking out onto the ship towards the bow of the ship. It was very cool! I also did a move for a small law firm, moving the owner’s furniture to a farm and into their barn. The hardest part of this was they had a goat that kept chasing the movers!”
How do you like to spend your time when you’re not working?
“I like to meditate and spend time traveling with my wife. I’m also a big music lover and used to play drums and the bass guitar in a band. Many years ago we would travel around the northeast and play gigs.”
