Project Overview
The Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene required a multi-phase relocation of laboratory, office, staff, and research environments into a newly constructed, state-of-the art public health facility. The project involved sensitive laboratory equipment, scientific materials, office contents, IT assets, and specialized coordination to keep the relocation organized, compliant, and on schedule.
Because the move included both administrative and critical lab environments, the project required detailed planning, phased execution, specialized equipment handling, and close coordination with environmental and rigging partners.
Scope of Work
The project scope included:
- Packing and relocation of office contents and IT equipment
- Full laboratory packing, including glassware, files, supplies, and research materials
- Movement of specialized laboratory equipment, including freezers, incubators, centrifuges, mass spectrometers, microscopes, and related assets
- Coordination with environmental specialists for chemical transfer
- Coordination with rigging specialists for oversized or highly technical equipment
- Sequenced relocation across four distinct phases to reduce downtime and maintain project control
Execution & Strategy
The relocation was completed in four phases to minimize operational disruption and keep laboratory functions moving according to the client’s schedule. Each phase required careful sequencing so equipment, staff, supplies, and work areas were available at the right time and moved within designated windows.
Several technical challenges required field experience and practical problem-solving. In one case, large research freezers could not fit upright in the origin elevators. The crew developed a safe handling approach to maneuver the units securely to the loading dock while protecting the equipment and surrounding facility.
The project also required collaboration with specialized partners, including Triumvirate Environmental for chemical transfer and North American Millwright for rigging services. This coordination helped ensure the relocation was handled safely, compliantly, and with the right expertise assigned to each part of the work.
Outcome
All four phases were completed on or ahead of schedule and within budget. Following the successful completion of the planned scope, the team was awarded additional out-of scope work based on project performance.
