We’ve reached a point in the development of technology where an entire business can be run on the Internet. But, this doesn’t mean that staying in the same location is always the best option.

If you’ve found better opportunities elsewhere, it may be time to consider relocating. Most entrepreneurs find difficulty, though, in telling their employees.

Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about how to tell your employees you are relocating.

Give Them As Much Notice as Possible

One of the worst things that you can do as an employer is to wait to tell your employees that you’re relocating. This is true even if you haven’t decided on a new location yet.

Not only will this cause them an undue amount of stress, but it may also erode the trust that they have in you.

In general, you’ll want to let employees know as far as six months in advance that you’re relocating your office. This will give them plenty of time to make the necessary preparations.

Be Straightforward

Don’t sugarcoat the move. If you’re relocating to an office 30 miles away, tell your employees the truth.

Ambiguous statements like ‘we’re moving just outside of town’ or ‘your commute might be a bit longer’ will only serve to frustrate and mislead your workers. It’s also important to be understanding if they don’t take this news well.

Additionally, relocating sometimes involves layoffs after the move. Don’t lead people into thinking they’re keeping their job if they aren’t.

Involve Your Employees

Everyone who will be working at the new location should be involved in the moving process. Not only will this cut down on the necessary time and costs, but it will also make your employees feel valued.

Don’t make the mistake of making participation mandatory, though. The best help you’ll get is from people who want to help, so search for volunteers first.

Giving your employees rewards like extra paid time off, a gift card to their favorite restaurant, a bottle of wine, etc. are all great ways to show your appreciation.

Celebrate

After you’ve made the transition, throw a celebration that involves everyone (even those who weren’t able to help during the process).

Ensuring that your workers feel comfortable and welcomed in your new location is crucial in order to dispel any latent resentment. This is especially true if your new office isn’t quite as nice as your previous one.

From here, take the time to personally see that each of your employees feel at home. This effort will go a long way toward keeping your employees feeling respected and heard.

Knowing How to Tell Your Employees You Are Relocating Can Seem Difficult

But it doesn’t have to be.

With the above information about how to tell your employees you are relocating in mind, you’ll be well on your way to avoiding any obstacles during the process.

We highly recommend Office Movers Express for your office move needs! Our company worked with them for our initial office move to a new location in Columbia, MD and the team super exceeded our expectations. We then scheduled our move between floors in our new location, once our office space was complete, and we’re so thankful that we did. The experience was exceptional. The movers were quick, which diminished the amount of time we stepped away from working that day. They exhibited great customer service with no damage to the walls and between floors.
